How is a Ring Sized?
To
make a ring smaller a piece is cut out.
To make a ring larger a gold piece of
the same karat and colour is inserted.
Then the ring is hard gold soldered and
refinished.
With a white gold ring,
the heat of sizing will remove some of
the rhodium plating, so its desirable to replate
a
white gold ring after sizing
with rhodium plating to return the
mirror like finish.
Sizing does not weaken a ring however
repeated sizing will make the ring
thinner. The ring must be filed to
remove the scale from the heat of
soldering and excess solder.
Don't have your ring sized more often
than absolutely necessary.
Hard gold soldering takes tremendous
heat and the chemicals and procedures to
return the polished finish
are harsh. To prevent damage, some
gemstones need to be removed from a ring
prior to repairs.
Stretching a Ring
A ring can be stretched but we do not
recommend it. Stretching strains
and puts tension in the gold that
makes it prone to cracking or splitting
apart. Stretching may also effect
the security of the setting and your
gemstones. Quality ring repairs do
not include stretching a ring.
Squaring the Back of the Band
This is a matter of personal preference.
Your finger is round, so a round ring is
the usual best fitting style. We
don't feel there is much benefit to this
unless your finger has excessive fatty
skin and the knuckle is small.
Ring Fit
That is a matter of personal
preference and relates to the style of
the ring and the shape of your finger.
Usually a knuckle is wider than the base
of the finger. We recommend that
the ring be as tight as possible going
over the knuckle.
Our fingers
often change size with weather, health
conditions or as a result of
medications. Its desirable to have
a ring with gemstones tighter so the
gems are visible rather than having it
spin loosely around.
Very Large Knuckles
Large knuckles often a result of
arthritis make it difficult to
comfortably wear a ring which must to be
large enough to slip over the enlarged
knuckle. There are various ways to
solve this and parts which can be
installed in your ring to address this
problem. Drop by a quality
jewellery the store and discuss the options.
What is My Ring Size?
It is best to have your finger sized by
a professional. One Canadian/America
ring size is 2.2mm. A ring can be sized to
one quarter size - so measuring yourself needs
to be very precise.
A professional will
have you try on rings of known sizes, so
you also know how the ring will feel on
your finger - hard to do with a piece
of
string or cardboard.
